Scores were not as high
as usual because of the wind. Charles Hulen of Hughes Arkansas, took the
high out of state trophy, and the well known Bill Harding of Toledo, Ohio,
was runner up. Mrs. Issac Andrews was high out of state woman. The shoot was
under the able management of Bill O’Shea. The scoreboard and traps were run
by Hartley Avery and Red Pitts. Florida shooter Joan Pflueger, attending the
Grand, and shooting the Champion of Champions race as a substitute for the
state winner, Clyde Wells was not present, went on to win the Champion of
Champion after a lengthy shoot off. This was the
first time in history of trapshooting at the Grand American that
a woman had won the Champion of Champions race.

The handicap high
shooter was E Lisk of New Jersey. Mr. Lisk, a dependable shooter in Florida,
entered to late to become eligible for out of state trophies. The clay
target championship was postponed from Saturday to Sunday; a first time in
history. The postponement was due to a $10,000,000 state rain. The physical
side was managed by Red Pitts of Remington Arms Co. and the inside was by
Art Cuscaden ,secretary. Mr.Cuscaden was assisted by Hartley Avery of
Winchester Western Co. Al Peterson, of Florida, shooting the Grand American
Handicap this same year, tied for high with 99 x 100 on preliminary
handicap day. Al came
in fourth on
the shoot off. |

This was to be the last
year a State Shoot was held at the Eutis Gun Club. Eutis was to lose their
gun club to the advances of industry. The first was
that for the first time in history Ray Burris of Jacksonville
actually won a grand slam , which is the 16yard championship, the handicap
championship, doubles championship, all around championship and the high
over all. As far as records go Ray was denied this win for a shooter named
Lawrence Fawer, who was simply residing in a hotel room downtown in Eustis,
declared himself as a Florida shooter. Burris tied Fawer in the handicap but
lost in the shoot off. It was later discovered that Fawer was not a Florida
resident; this was the straw that finally broke the camels back.
The shooters at point were totally aware that they had
run into a new area of trapshooting and decided that a new constitution, a
new organization and new look was necessary for the Florida trapshooters.

This year was a great
turning point for Florida. A new spirit came into trapshooting that was to
bring about a new trapshooting organization; many new ideas all of which
would place the state of Florida in a position of recognition throughout the
trapshooting world. This new inspiration was a new elected President, Carl
Mayhue. His accomplishments are marked on the history of trapshooting
progress made under his direction and will long be remembered in the state
of Florida.

The first two days the
targets were tricky in the deceptive winds. On the third day the rains
deluged the shooting fields. The 16 yard championship was won by Carl Mayhue
while shooting in the rain. Part of the shoot was called off on Saturday as
the rain became to heavy and continued Sunday morning. The weather was
bright and clear but no one was able to catch Mayhue’s winning score.
During the election, Bob Graham and Carl Mayhue were nominated for
president. Mayhue declined. Graham was elected unopposed. Gordon Teets and
Carl Flock were nominated for vice president, Flock declined and Teets was
elected unopposed. Bob Graham resigned before his term ended. Gabe Creeden
was elected to fill out his term, by the board of directors. The F.T.A. held
a banquet at the Huntington Hotel. Mr. Willard Gause, Bill Scott and Charles
Hancock were in charge. Bart Geiger retired the J.B. Royall Trophy which had
been in circulation for 27 years. It consisted of 200 combined targets 100
Handicap & 100 Doubles. Bart won them in 1940, 1945, and 1950. Then placed a
new trophy in his name the following year.
